abstract

background: calcium (ca+2) plays an important role in many biophysiological mechanisms .the present study was carried out to assess alterations in total serum calcium level before and after operations in consider to the type of anesthesia. materials and methods: this descriptive study was conducted on 74 women who candidate for gynecological abdominal operations during one year at al-zahra maternity hospital in rasht, iran. the patients underwent general anesthesia (ga) (n=37) or spinal anesthesia (sa) (n=37) randomly. blood samples (2 cc), were obtained an hour before the anesthesia and two hours after that. the blood samples had been sent to the laboratory for analyzing .total serum calcium level, magnesium (mg) and albumin level were measured by photometric methods. inferential statistic was analyzed with the vilkson non-parametric and pearson's correlation test. p-values less than 0.05 have been considered as significant different. results: there was a significant trend to decrease in calcium levels after all gynecological abdominal operations, but there was a significant correlation between general anesthesia (ga) and reduction of serum calcium level (p=0.026) . therefore, general anesthesia (ga) is accompanied by more calcium reduction than spinal anesthesia (sa). conclusion: serum calcium levels tend to decrease after all gynecological abdominal surgeries, but general anesthesia (ga) is accompanied by more calcium reduction than spinal one. it needs to further specific studies, to illustrate association between different methods of anesthesia and ca+2 changes.

Comparison of visual evoked potential monitoring during spine surgeries under total intravenous anesthesia versus balanced general anesthesia

OBJECTIVE To determine the comparison of its clinical utility and safety profile for visual evoked potential (VEP) monitoring during prone spine surgeries under total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) versus balanced general anesthesia using the SightSaver™ visual stimulator. METHODS The protocol was designed asa pilot, single center, prospective, randomized, and double-arm study. Subjects were r...

Comparison of neonatal and maternal outcomes after cesarean delivery with general anesthesia and spinal anesthesia

Aims and background: The choice of anesthesia for cesarean section depends on factors such as the cause of the operation, the degree of urgency of the operation and the patient’s desire. Following the choice of any of the methods either general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia for mother and baby will have consequences. The aim of this study was to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes afte...

COMPARISON OF HEMODYNAMIC CHANGES DUE TO INTRAVENOUS OXYTOCIN INFUSION DURING GENERAL AND SPINAL ANESTHESIA IN ELECTIVE CESAREAN SECTION

Background & Aims: Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the life-threatening complications after labor and cesarean section. Its prevalence is 6 percent. Metratonia is the most common cause of this complication. Some medications can prevent it. Oxytocin is the most common uterine vasoconstrictor and is used routinely after delivery for decreasing hemorrhage. The aim of this study is to compare hemod...

The Effect of General Anesthesia and Spinal Anesthesia on Quality of Recovery after Abdominal Hysterectomy; Randomised Clinical Trial

Background and Objective: The low quality of recovery after anesthesia has prolonged postoperative hospitalization time. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of general anesthesia and spinal anesthesia on quality of recovery after abdominal hysterectomy. Materials and Methods: This study is a clinical trial on 100 women 35 to 70 years with ASA class I, II who candidate to abdomi...

comparison of surgical stress responses during spinal and general anesthesia in curettage surgery

conclusions blood glucose and hemodynamic changes caused by surgical stress were not significantly different between two groups. results there was not significantly difference between blood glucose level of both groups during 10 minutes before, 20 and 60 minutes after the intiation of anesthesia. heart rate changes in the general and spinal groups compared to the baseline level were decreased u...
